Reynald N.HarpinMichael Mainelli leads Z/Yen, the City of London’s leading commercial think-tank. He co-founded Z/Yen in 1994 in order to promote societal advance through better finance and technology.  Michael’s early scientific research in aerospace and computer graphics led to him starting Swiss companies in seismology, cartography and energy information, including the first complete digital map of the world in 1983, Mundocart.  Michael spent several years as a partner and board member of one of the leading accountancy firms directing financial services work in the UK and overseas, and has had roles as a Director of Europe’s largest R&D organization - the UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, Vice-Chairman of The Strategic Planning Society, Chief Scientist of the Financial Laboratory winning a DTI Foresight Challenge award (“Alpha” science) in 1996 for visualising financial risk, and leading Z/Yen’s DTI Smart Award 2003 winning PropheZy project building a leading risk/reward prediction engine.  Michael was personally honoured by the British Computer Society as “IT Director of the Year” 2004/2005. Michael is Mercers’ School Memorial Professor of Commerce at Gresham College where his lecture theme is “Choice”.

Michael is a non-executive director of UKAS – the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, Chairman of City Axis - a business environment solutions company, a non-executive director of Sirius Exploration plc – a mining firm, a Trustee of Ocean Alliance and the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Strategic Change and the Journal of Business Strategy.  Michael is a qualified accountant, computer specialist and management consultant with a degree from Harvard in Government with economics, with a further year of mathematics and engineering at Trinity College Dublin and a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
